Chinese Speech Competition (H Level)

A Chinese speech competition has been ongoing at SHSID. Since the preliminary rounds within each class, things have become more intense. Standards are now incredibly high, and the audience are more than excited than ever for the official speech competition. From the topic of social phenomena, the audience not only got to know more about what is going on around us, but also what their fellow classmates are concerned about or interested in.

Although many were very nervous about presenting on stage, the cheering after each and every round was a to comfort the participants. As they make their speeches, the nervousness slowly faded away. They fluently presented their own thoughts on topics such as the disquieting behavior of wild kids, the process of entering a non-cash society, and others like bullying and gender inequality.

Some established clear logical links, some provided clear statistics proving their claim, and some even shared their own personal experiences. Because many of these topics were highly debatable, the audience were also paying close attention, minds spinning swiftly, taking in the new knowledge while having their own opinions. Aside from the content, seeing the way that the speakers presented their content was enjoyable as well.

Although the whole speech competition was relatively long, the variation in the speaking styles grabbed the attention of the audience. Some speakers presented in a humorous fashion, while others choose to present in a more serious tone, or simply in a casual voice so that the audience could relate to them. Listening to the speeches was a great learning experience on how to present in a way that grabs people’s attention or makes them feel comfortable. Being able to receive a comprehensive perspective of society expands our views and understanding of important topics.

Not only did the speech competition inform us what is going on in our society, it was also an opportunity for the students to get experiences in presenting, as well as a perfect chance for those who were willing to express their thoughts. Let’s give a huge congratulations for those who participated in the speech competition, especially the winner Warren from 7(5). Hopefully everyone had a key takeaway from the Chinese Speech Competition.
