Thesis Defense Session for the SHS Science Fair
Thesis Defense Session for the SHS Science Fair
On May 30th, our students from both the Local Division and the International Division joined the thesis defense session for the Science Fair. The participants consisted of students working in fields such Botany, Microbiology, Medicine and Health, and Economics, some of whom won a prize at the Shanghai Adolescents Science & Technology Innovation Contest.
At 3:15pm, after audiences had filled the classrooms, the event officially started when the student representatives gave a welcoming speech to the participants and announced the name of the first presenter. The thesis defense was composed of two parts: a five-minute presentation time and a seven-minute Q&A session. The presentation time was used for summarizing the content of the thesis paper with the goal of avoiding using too many technical terms, since the audience consisted of both students and professors. The Q&A session was for the professors from Tsinghua University to ask the participants questions about the content of their presentation.
After working intently in the laboratories, the students proudly presented what they had found and learned from their experiments. Most of the participants decided to break the presentation into parts such as background, hypothesis, material, experiment, and conclusion. Because this part of the thesis defense can be prepared beforehand, everyone did an excellent job of presenting. However, the real challenge of the event was the Q&A session. No matter how well one presented, the three professors could always find flaws and questions that surprised the participants. Although facing immense pressure and stress, the participants tried their best to answer the questions posed by the professors.
Let us once again congratulate the students who won awards and hope that more students will participate in the thesis defense activities with their own scientific research results.
