SHSID Achieves Great Results at the Physics Bowl

On March 31st, under the guidance of Mr Dongsheng Zhang, several students of SHSID attended the Physics Bowl competition at multiple testing centers in Shanghai. On May 15th, the results came out. We learned that SHSID achieved two World Top 100 spots, eleven national top 30% spots in Division 1, and 1 World Top 100 and 1 National Top 30% in Division 2. SHSID also won the regional first place in team score for Division 1.

Held by the AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers), the Physics Bowl is an individual competition that tests one’s ability in physics. It is the most influential physics competition in the USA. There are two divisions for the competition. Division 1 is generally designed for students from 9th Grade and 10th Grade, while Division 2 is designed for students from 11th Grade and above.

Eric Fan and John Zhou from 10th Grade entered the World Top 100 in Division 1 and Alex Li from 11th Grade for Division 1. Angle Qian, Hyuntaek Oh, Hiroki Endo, Leo Li, Boo Sung Kim, Zihao Zhao, Richard Zhang, Tiffany Li, James Liu, Michael Zhang and Charles Wang placed in the National Top 30% in Division 1 and Brian Nlong Zhao in Division 2.

Besides from the good results that the students achieved, the Physics Bowl competition also taught useful physics knowledge that would be helpful for further studies in the field. Overall, the Physics Bowl was a delightful experience.
