Graduation Speech by Principal Feng( Abstract)

Dear parents, teachers, and students,

Today we gather together here to hold the grand graduation ceremony for the Class of 2018. Maybe soon, or after a while, you will not remember today’s ceremony. But it’s a joy to seize the day, isn’t it? Please accept my sincere wish- happy graduation!

On this very special day, please open your heart and share the pain of your departure and your joy for a bright future with your friends, teachers, and parents.

If life is a parabola pointing downwards, you are on the rising part of it. No matter whether you wish it or not, you are heading toward the peak of your life.

To everyone, high school graduation is a crucial milestone in your life. At this moment, it’s not easy to grow taller by even one centimeter. At this moment, your parents still call you ‘baby’, but they also start to communicate with you more and more equally, and they start to let you be more independent. You have grown up, and you have your own ideas. From now on, you will face the future independently. I wish you all the best!

Starting tomorrow, you will leave the school, and your teachers will not accompany you as your mentors on your path. But they will always care about you and give their best wishes to your future. If you achieve great results or you encounter some problems, please share them with your teachers. If you come back to Shanghai, you are welcome to come back and visit. The school will always be the harbor of your soul.

I believe it is important to be a successful person, but it is more important to become a useful person to serve society, and also to be an able person who helps others. We should all have life goals but the goals shouldn’t be too high. It’s not necessary to pursue perfection at every moment. Very often, ‘2nd best’ is the best result. No matter where you will go, in your life and your study, I hope you will follow your heart and do what you really feel passionate about. You can push yourself to extremes, but you should also learn how to forgive yourself. It is ok if you have tried your best.

On the midnight of May 26th, I watched the European Cup final. When the game was over, the Liverpool goalkeeper Karius was heartbroken because of his mistakes. I felt his pain. Of course, at that moment, it was not possible to change the result no matter how much he blamed himself. After every competition, the team who took 2nd place would cry. When our basketball team lost their game in the final, they also shed their tears. But I am still proud of you. Entering the final is an honor already. What’s important is you have tried your best. At any moment, it’s not a shame to show your true feelings. To be real is to be a true man.

When it comes to facing the future, you will be on your own. You are not simply changing your campus from high school to college, but you are stepping into an unknown world. Life always repeats itself– from the unknown to the known, and then to another unknown. It’s a cycle. The cycle will go on and you will fight till the end of it. It takes courage to challenge the unknown world and it’s wise to follow your own heart when facing difficulties. I hope you will have both courage and wisdom on the road ahead.

Reading through the student profiles provided by your homeroom teachers, I am deeply impressed and touched by these great sample students. One student studied at SHSID from Grade 1 through Grade 12. He is the first student who completed both his primary and secondary education at SHSID. His name will be written into the annuals of our school history. I believe, with the joint efforts of all you SHSIDers, the school will become better and we will have more such students in the future.

Among the class of 2018, there are many talented students, including the captain of school soccer team, the captain and the key members of the school basketball team, the key members of the school swimming team, the leader of school orchestra, our figure skaters, ballet dancers, and hip-hop dancers as well as designers and a contract model.

Let me share one sentence from the comments on a student written by his homeroom teacher: ‘His care and passion about environmental protection all comes from his pure heart and his instinct, without any disguise.’

I love this kind of act, which comes from your true heart and instinct. Do not hesitate when you encounter problems. Follow your heart! Do what you believe is right and you will become great people who contribute to the world.

Dear children, like your parents, I will miss you all. Happy Graduation! May you always be safe and be happy.
