SASMO Award
SASMO Award
Middle school students from SHSID participated in the 2018 Singapore and Asian School Math Olympiad (SASMO) this year and saw great success, with the 5th to 8th graders racking up 17 gold medals, 23 silver medals, and 24 bronze medals in total across three grade divisions. SASMO is one of the largest and most prestigious math competitions held in Asia. This year, over 28,000 attendees participated in the competition with divisions ranging from 2nd to 11th grade. The competition aims to create math problems that promote higher thinking in order to fully challenge participants that have signed up for the competition.
I was a participant in this year’s SASMO competition in the 8thgrade division. I personally felt that the competition problems were fairly challenging and interesting in the sense that one could apply knowledge from math class and, in certain cases, extracurricular activities to such math problems asked and find a creative way to solve the problem. In the end, I was lucky enough to be a gold medalist in the competition. SASMO allowed me to become even more interested in the field of mathematics, and the feeling of accomplishment after completing the competition is very satisfying. I will work harder in further math study and have better achievements in the following competitions.
