Inspiring Bright Minds-- 2018 SHSID (Middle School) Creative Program Expo

On the afternoon of May 31st at SHSID Stadium, Inspiring Bright Minds -- 2018 SHSID (Middle School) Creative Program Expo was held successfully. Nearly 30 stations on science, technology, engineering and arts were set up and displayed. Projects, posters, products and interaction and on-spot explanations were facilitated.

Similar to last year, this creative program expo continued to focus on “program, creation and experience”, while aslo including the new elements, such as interdisciplinary fields and the combining of different age groups. The expo is a window into the achievements of the Middle School creative and innovative courses which have been carried out over the past several years. The core ideas imbedded in these innovation programs are to develop innovative awareness, to experience the innovative process, and to cultivate innovative abilities. The students are required to complete a unique “product” design independently by the end of the program. Currently, the Middle School has innovative courses in the following subject areas: 1)Engineering: Electronics, First Lego League, Arduino, 3D Innovational Space, K’nex Mechanics; 2)Information Technology: Mobile Programming, Scratch; 3)Science: Biology Workshop involving the study of plants, bacteria, fungi, and animals; 4)Literature and Arts: Chinese Creative Writing, English Creative Writing, Creative Art, Creative Composing; 5)Creative Design: Creative Media Design, Future City Design, Odyssey of the Mind, Destination Imagine, and other creative contests.

Through the program, students started to apply their knowledge and creative mind to their community and life. “ When I was in grade 7, I signed up for a biology club and came to the expo with my teacher. After that, I found myself very interested in biology and then during the summer, I had many experience in the lab. I wrote an essay on our findings. Today, I bring my project to the expo again. I feel so excited and the learning has been so meaningful.”said by Sofia from 8(10). Her essay was about Drosophila Melanesia, and it won the second prize in the 33th Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Innovation competition (Biomedical Group).

Inspiring Bright Minds, is not only the topic of this Creative Program Expo, but this name also encapsulates the goal for the school’s creative and innovative courses. We encourage students to participate in scientific research and experience, and use their wonderful imagination to create their own products. Nothing is impossible!
