SHSID Students made Great Achievements in the 2018 BioOlympiad Initiative USA-China and BBO (China)

The results of the 2018 BioOlympiad Initiative USA-China and the British Biology Olympiad (BBO) were recently announced.

Up to 14 students from SHSID stood out from the crowd, winning the Gold Award, Silver Award, Bronze Award and the Honorable Award.

As the premiere biology competition for high school students in the US, the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) enriches the life science education experience of nearly 10,000 talented students annually. It provides the motivation, curricular resources, and skills training to take them beyond their classroom experience to a level of international competitiveness. The USABO Open Exam has been brought to China and is named the "BioOlympiad Initiative USA-China". It is intended to help students in China improve their biology skills and understand their level on an international scale. Outstanding students are granted the opportunity to later attend top science programs. This year, a total of 125 international schools from all over China participated in the 2018 BioOlympiad Initiative USA-China. The competition was extremely fierce.

The British Biology Olympiad was created in 1995, stimulating students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents. It enables students to demonstrate their knowledge and to be suitably rewarded and publicly recognized through the award of medals, certificates and other prizes. The hope is that by competing in this Olympiad, students who are already interested in this valuable, wide-ranging and rewarding subject will be encouraged to continue their studies. This competition was also introduced in China. Outstanding Chinese students have the opportunity to compete with British students for the award of medals and are also granted the opportunity to attend top science programs in the future. This year, up to 106 international schools and key middle schools participated in this competition in China.

The outstanding achievements of students in this contest are inseparable from the inquisitive and diligent work of students at SHSID and the strong support of their biology teachers. Following the model of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum, students in the competition integrated cutting-edge technology and experiments with biological knowledge, combining basic knowledge and domain know-how. In appreciating biological research progress, students felt the charm of biological disciplines. At the same time, through participating in this biology contest, students were exposed to a variety of novel questions, which enabled them to become aware of gaps in their own knowledge and courage them to accept higher-level challenges. All of the students who were involved made great progress in their biology learning journey.
