2018 SHSID College Fair

At SHSID we believe that students should be provided with full exposure to various options and form a clearer picture of their path to university. Therefore, the school is continuing the tradition of the annual College Fair. On the afternoon of May 26th, more than 400 students and parents gathered at SHSID. With representatives, current students and alumni from 20 universities all present, the students and parents had a superb opportunity to learn more about these universities, ask questions, and potentially build connections with admissions officers.

We hosted guests from universities not only from the United States, but also from other countries and regions including but not limited to Hong Kong, Canada, and South Korea. This helped to better serve all of our students' demands and interests. The representatives provided first-hand information on their universities, the application process, and their own experiences living and studying on campus. Fortunately for parents and students who were interested in several universities, they were able to listen to multiple representatives, as the College Fair was separated into several sessions.

As the sessions began, classrooms were packed with prospective college students who attentively listened to the speeches. After covering basic topics such as financial aid and career preparation, the sessions turned into Q&As where students and parents were eager to ask thoughtful questions and in turn received detailed answers from the representatives. Each representative had their own style of showcasing their universities. For example, one session delivered by an SHS alumnus who is now studying at Harvard University was entirely Q&A. The representative from UCLA devoted more time to explaining the uniqueness of their schools and the nuances in their application process.

An alumnus who studied at Carnegie Mellon University emphasized the fact that though it is flexible for students to switch majors within the same college or school, for example the School of Computer Science, that is not the case between colleges. Additionally, many discussions effectively addressed common misconceptions and rumors among parents.

The seniors at SHSID also gave presentations about their own experiences when applying for college. They aimed to pass on their knowledge to their younger schoolmates, so that they can successfully apply and thrive in university.

After a condensed but informative College Fair, the students and parents left with many useful takeaways as they proceed one step closer to their goals.
