Primary Subjects: A Field Trip to the Compound Library
Primary Subjects: A Field Trip to the Compound Library
At 1:30pm on May 18th, the students of SHSID Pudong campus visited the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (CIMM), which is located in Fudan University’s Zhangjiang division. Since it was the 14th Public Science Day at CIMM, the students experienced a wonderful lab trip, partly thanks to the patient instruction of the guides in CIMM.
First, the students and teachers visited the compound library located on the first floor. After listening to an introduction by the guide, we were surprised to learn that millions of samples are stored in such a narrow space. Thanks to the application of new technologies, the storage procedure has become more and more convenient and precise. Instead of walking into an outdated, freezing storage room, in which the temperature is 20 degrees below zero, the lab workers only need to drive the capsule with a QR code on it into the latest mini sample banks. The students observed the whole process of sample storage, and were impressed.
Next, the students were led to the labs on the second floor. Not only did they observe an acid-base titration experiment, but also they met the scientists who were working in the cell culture lab. The lab workers and teachers explained stem cells and cancer cells while their students listened politely.
During the lab trip, the students experienced the working environment of the lab. Meanwhile, they also learned a lot of intriguing knowledge that they haven’t yet learned in class, which aroused their enthusiasm for science, and their curiosity about the world.
