Grades 7-8:English Speech Competition
Grades 7-8:English Speech Competition
On the afternoon of May 3rd, an English Speech Competition was held in the auditorium. The competitors of this event were top speakers from the previous 2 rounds. The speakers were categorized into 4 groups: 7S/S+, 8S/S+, 7H/H+. and 8H/H+. Several English teachers performed the role of judges, and they graded the speakers according to the quality of the speeches on a chart.
The competition was overflowing with excellent speeches. This year, the speeches had to relate to the topic of ‘global citizenship’, or ‘acting and thinking globally’. All of the speakers prepared a lot, shown from both their carefully made PPT slides and outstanding content.
Each speaker tried their best to inform the audience about the topic they were presenting in the most interesting way, so it would catch and hold people’s attention. On the other hand, they also had to balance volume of content with the time limit, which was 4 minutes. Additionally, the speakers also had to express their thoughts thoroughly through strong words and hand gestures. All of the techniques the speakers had to handle added up added to quite a challenge, but despite this they all performed extraordinarily well..
After the delivery of the gripping speeches, came the lucky draw. Random voters could receive a bag of snacks if they were picked. The lucky draw tends to wake the audience up and stir a dahs of excitement among them.
At last, the winners of each category were announced. Their scores were all alarmingly close to each other. Therefore, I think that throughout the competition, the most important thing speakers gained was not the final rank of 1, 2, or 3; it was the experience of being on stage, and controlling one’s emotions and pace despite being nervous. Listeners alike should feel inspired by the speech-makers, and learn from the their strengths and flaws. Hopefully, every student in SHSID will continue to improve in the future!
