Persistence, Cooperation, and Personal Growth: 28hr Survival Training for Grade 9

On April 27th and 28th, the 9th graders of Shanghai High School International Division participated in Survival Training at Oriental Land. After an one-hour journey, the students arrived at the destination in Qingpu District. Gathering at the campsite, the cooks of the lunch groups were led to the cooking area. The rest of the students watched a tent-building demonstration intently.

The students were divided into different lunch groups beforehand, and each lunch group was responsible for building two tents. Tent building required close cooperation between the students because some of the building materials were heavy, and the tents were very large. Carefully following the example set by the coach, every group succeeded in building a tent. During the tent construction, each individual group member demonstrated seamless cooperation with each other and displayed a strong sense of determination to finish the task. When the members in charge of tent-building finished their task, the cooks finished preparing lunch. After the long trip and the tiring tent-building, every student enjoyed their first meal of the survival training.

Following lunch was a series of class activities, including a rowing competition. These activities required the creativity of individual students and collaboration between classmates. During these competitions, all classes strived for first place. All participants of the competitions enjoyed the process of competing and team-building.

After dinner, service groups and the ASB prepared a number of team activities, such as passing hula hoops, mafia, etc. Students enjoyed these activities, and laughter could be constantly heard. After playing multiple games for more than an hour, all students returned to their tents exhausted, and soon fell asleep.

On the morning of the second day, students woke up early and prepared to take the tents apart. Because taking the tents apart was as difficult as constructing them, most of the groups decided to divide the work amongst group members, with each student handling different components of the task. The most exciting event of the second day was visiting the real-sized model of an aircraft carrier. The interior of the model was a museum of weapons, exhibiting weaponry ranging from ancient spears to modern guns. In the museum, students gained knowledge of different types of arms, and enjoyed the process of learning. The students were even allowed to use guns to shoot at targets. Climbing up the stairs, at the wide deck of the ship, models of fighter planes were displayed. After the visit, the survival training was over, and the happy but tired 9th grade returned back at school.

This survival training strengthened the bonds between classmates through various activities, and provided a chance for the 9th graders to collaborate with each other, which will become an essential skill in the future. The ninth graders of SHSID experienced unforgettable adventures in the great outdoors, mastering lifesaving survival skills.
