Puxi Grade 3: Everlasting Classics

During Chinese class on April 24th, Puxi’s Grade 3 students watched a TV program called Everlasting Classics together. This program is all about experiencing the charm of Chinese poetry.

Tomorrow comes and again comes tomorrow, Tomorrows are like rivers that endlessly flow.So sings the catchy Song of Tomorrow ,which tells a clear and easy truth that one should cherish every moment of life and avoid putting off today’s tasks until tomorrow. Although it’s an easy poem to understand, it contains a deep principle: that time will fly so fast, and never come back.

The roaring Yangtze flows ever eastward, its waves scouring away all heroes. So declares vast symphonic poem Ling Jiang Xian. The broad, deep voice of Yang Hongji brought our students back to the Three Kingdoms period, full of shining spears and armored horses. Heroes or not, right or wrong…after experiencing those ups and downs, the poets of the time became detached and transcendent.

At last, the little poem Mosses touched our students the most.Mosses bud like rice, yet bloom like peonies,it ponders. In the TV program, students from a Guizhou village primary school chanted the poem in their tiny voices, eulogizing their simplest hopes and sincerest dreams. Whatever form life takes, it will blossom gorgeously if you have a pure heart. The volunteer teacher Mr Liang Jun used simple notes, and brought the students to these poems that have been spread through the ages. Those verses not only brought them a rich ‘cultural deposit’, but also uplifted their spirit.

Through watching the program and chanting the classics, we hope that the seed of culture planted in our students will sprout and grow up in their hearts. Wherever they go in the world, we hope that when they hear a certain verse, they will smile knowingly, and remember their childhood in Shanghai.
