Puxi Grade 3、4: Chinese Poetry Competition

As the old saying goes, one who is filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance. During the Chinese classes on April 23rd, the third graders and fourth graders had their Second Chinese Poetry Competition in the Primary Section Auditorium. Unlike last year, the teachers and students of Shanghai Primary School were also invited to join this competition.

Every class had elected the champion of poetry to attend the finals of the Chinese Poetry Competition on April 23rd. The competition was divided into seven rounds, with each round covering different topics related to poetry. In each team, a third grader and a fourth grader worked with one student from Shanghai Primary School. Altogether there were six teams, each answering questions in order to win the prize. Each team had one chance to turn to their teachers or classmates for help. All the contestants performed with confidence and calm, and wowed the audience with their broad range of poetry knowledge.

At the end, all the Chinese teachers played a traditional Chinese poetry game entitled Feihualing. The game’s theme was ‘hua’ (花), meaning flower in Chinese. All the teachers appeared so calm as they recited a lot of poetries about flowers and received applause from audience. The winning teams were awarded by Ms Bao and Ms Zhang from the Primary Section. Ms. Mao, the principal of Shanghai Primary School and Mr Liu, the principal of the Primary and Middle Sections in SHSID each praised the competition. Both of them were deeply impressed by the enthusiasm students showed for poetry.

For thousands of years, poetry has been the favorite type of literature for many in China. There were many famous poets from different periods throughout Chinese history, and thousands of their poems are still read and appreciated today. The Chinese Poetry Competition was held to remind students of those classic Chinese poems and to promote cultural heritage, as well as help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry. Let's look forward to the next Chinese Poetry Competition!
