Chemistry & Economics Departments: Professional Development Day Lecture

On April 20th, the school held a professional development day during the students’ Spring Break. The staff of the Chemistry and Economics departments attended lectures by Dr PJ and Dr Pardy. These lectures aimed to help the teachers learn how to better communicate with students and also organize their classes.

First, Dr PJ shared his ideas on the skills of communicating with students. He said we may have different types of students in our classes– some may be eager for teachers’ attention while others don’t want too much. Therefore, good teachers need to use different strategies on different students. He also mentioned how to arouse students’ attention in class and keep them awake. He also sets an office hour just to let students find him and talk to him.

After that, Dr Pardy talked about how to break the fixed mindsets of certain students. Many people in life have a ‘fixed mindset’. They may think that a low score means low intelligence. This may lead students to think they are not capable and cannot achieve better goals. However, by adopting a ‘growth mindset’, people’s true potential can be improved through efforts and perseverance.

The lectures were helpful, and for some: inspiring. Let’s see how the two doctors’ ideas can be applied in our classrooms.
