PD Day: High School History Department

On April 20th, all the History and Geography teachers from SHSID’s Middle and High Schools came together in Room 127 of the Zhongxing Annex Building. The following topics were discussed during the meeting: homework grading, rubrics and comments, document-based exam writing, documentary and film projects, and the Middle School Cultural Bazaar.

Firstly, Mr Joshua Pickart stressed the importance of feedback. He gave some specific tips such as effective rubber stamping. He also discussed the use of rubrics in document-based essay grading through showing some AP students’ work and the comments he wrote on them, which provided us with very helpful suggestions in establishing expectations and giving feedback for formative written assignments.

Then Mr Chris Hodachok used his midterm test examples to demonstrate the use of documents to construct source-based multiple choice questions, short answers, and essay questions. He encouraged everyone to produce more high quality questions which push the students to organize and think further about their learned knowledge rather than just memorize and write from memory.

Mr Pickart and Mr Hodachok later briefly introduced the 9th and 10th grade historical video projects and showed some previous examples.

Finally, Mr. Dustin Sharp introduced the Middle School Cultural Bazaar, including requirements and examples. He noticed the common spirit shared by the Middle and High School History & Geography courses and hoped some video making projects from Middle School will prepare the students well for future High School tasks. The Middle School History & Geography teachers will be more engaged in homeroom activities from now on, and take more responsibility in helping their students pursue global citizenship.

The meeting was a good opportunity for all teachers to learn about the ‘big events’ from different parts of the, school and attach more importance to feedback and question design in the future.
