Puxi Grade 1: Teaching American Money in Efficient and Attracting Ways
Puxi Grade 1: Teaching American Money in Efficient and Attracting Ways
American Money is a difficult topic for any first graders living in China. Not all of the students are familiar with American money, especially the coins. Learning all the different denominations is particularly tricky for them. To remedy this problem, all the Math teachers of first grade worked together very efficiently and found a variety of useful resources online. They eventually came up with many interesting and efficient classroom activities to help the students learn about American currency.
First, they printed color pictures of each kind of coin and hung them on the wall. They also downloaded a very funny rap song about coins and played the song repeatedly during lunch, recess, and break time so that the students could learn the song to help them remember the names and value of the coins.
The teachers gave one very interesting home assignment about money, which was called ‘One Dollar Lollipop’. The students needed to cut out paper coins and stick down a total amount of one dollar onside their ‘lollipop’. The students decorated their ‘lollipops’ too. The aim of this assignment was to help the students understand how a dollar is made up of one hundred cents.
One of the most exciting class activities about money was called ‘Coin Hunt’. During this, the students worked as a group to find hidden ‘coins’ on the grass outside. When they found the ‘coins’, they took photos with their iPads and then went back to the classroom to figure out how much money they found in all. The whole game required each student to be very careful, both to find coins and to count the total amount of money quickly and correctly.
To help the students practice counting change, the teachers designed some shopping games as well to encourage the students to count the total value of their items, and collect the correct change.
Although currency is a very difficult topic for most first graders, the Math teachers of 1st Grade thought of many different, efficient, and funny ways to help their students grasp American money. Now every first grader at SHSID can count American coins. Isn’t that awesome?
