Puxi Grade 5: “iRead” Project at the Shanghai Sunrise Library

Students from the 5th and 6th grade of SHSID donated RMB 30,000 raised from campus charity sales to the ‘iRead’ project of Shanghai Sunrise Library. Their generous support will enable Sunrise Library to open 6 more iRead reading corners at 2 rural primary schools in the year to come, meaning more rural children of the same age as our students will be able to enjoy reading!

A representative from Shanghai Sunrise called Ms Yuan was also invited to talk about the reading abilities of rural children as well as the iRead project. You can read what she said below:

1. About Sunrise Library

Villages in China’s central provinces- which are less than 10 hours’ drive from Shanghai- are home to many rural children of the same age as you. Just like you guys, they are smart, lively and thirsty for knowledge. Many of them see their parents once a year, or even every three years, as their parents have to go out for work to feed the family. They are living without interesting and quality books, or people who can guide them to high-quality reading. They need our help.

Registered as a privately-owned non-profit entity in 2005, Sunrise Library is a charity organization committed to providing rural children with reading experience. By improving their reading level and enabling better understanding of the world around them, Sunrise aims to cultivate a new generation of rural children with sound personalities.

As of December 2017, Sunrise Library is operating 15 rural children’s libraries in 5 provinces across China, and has opened 30 class book corners. At the same time, the ‘iRead’ project has been expanded to 12 rural primary schools with nearly 300 rural teachers being trained and more than 30,000 children being helped.

2. About iRead Project

How can we help those rural children without books and company & guidance of patents?

After carefully listening to my words, our students soon came to the conclusion: ask their teachers to help.

Yes, teachers play a core role in the iRead project.

Of those who can accompany left-behind children for long, rural primary school teachers are the only ones who may exert positive effects on these children’s reading lives. In their entire teaching career, each rural primary school teacher will face at least hundreds of rural children, so their growth will help that of hundreds of rural children!

Sunrise Library’s iRead project trains rural teachers to be rural children’s reading guides, and provides hardware and software resources that match their ability with an aim to improve rural left-behind children’s reading level, help them better know the world, and thus cultivate a new generation of rural children with sound personalities.

3. What can we do with RMB 33,000?

This must be your key focus.

All your donation will be used to establish 6 iRead class reading corners in 2 rural primary schools in 2018. We are planning to purchase nearly 1,100 books and 6 book shelves to serve around 300 rural children.

Books at the reading corner are carefully selected by iRead teachers. Teachers recommend books which can be found from the reading corner after each iRead class. The goal is to improve students’ extended reading time, in an effort to gradually cultivate their own reading habit.

With your help, we believe more faraway rural children will become fond of reading, like us!
