Puxi Grade 5: A letter from "Heart to Heart"
Puxi Grade 5: A letter from "Heart to Heart"
The following is a letter to SHSID from the Charity Heart to Heart.
It was a pleasure to be invited to speak to the Grade 5 students at Shanghai High School International Division recently. The class had contacted me to say they had raised RMB 10,000 for a charity and that Heart to Heart had been picked to be that charity. What a great thing for the students to do! I wanted to make sure they understood what Heart to Heart does and how much we and the children we help appreciate the donation.
At the beginning of the presentation I told the class how we are a registered Chinese charity and that our main mission is to provide corrective surgery for Chinese children from all over China with congenital heart defects (CHD) whose parents are unable to afford the surgery. As of December 2017, H2H has sponsored over 1,171 children for heart surgery. The surgeries not only saved their lives, but transformed the lives of their families. I also told them that H2H needs volunteers at all times. In addition to needing funds and volunteers, H2H would love to have any goods the families of SHSID would like to donate. These items are given to the sponsored children/their families when they check in to the hospital for their heart surgery. Or the items may be taken to villages, orphanages, etc. which need them. The need is continuous. The recipients would appreciate anything SHSID has to give– new or gently used clothing (adult or children), shoes, bedding, toys, etc.
The students were very attentive and asked great questions. They showed that they have an interest in helping others who are less fortunate than themselves and are very keen to learn how they could help as individuals and families. Although they are still too young to be able to volunteer in the hospital (the minimum age is 15), I hope I impressed on them that there are still things they can do to help the children who need surgery– fund-raising activities, clothing/donated goods drives, telling people about Heart to Heart, etc. In fact, the classes were very inspiring. I was amazed how much they want to help. I hope that they are able to put some of their words into actions. The donation of RMB 10,000 is certainly a huge start! Once the child they help comes into the hospital for surgery, some of the students will be able to visit him/her in the hospital. I am sure meeting the child they helped will show them even more clearly how saving a life of a child is a very precious and wonderful thing to do.
Thank you Grade 5! You have made a HUGE difference!
