Grades 7-8: Traditional Chinese Costume Day
Grades 7-8: Traditional Chinese Costume Day
On the first school day after the Qingming Festival, the Chinese Garments Day came to us as a part of Cultural Bazaar Week. As a vital part of Chinese civilization, traditional clothing plays an important role in the country's history and culture. We are so grateful to have a taste of how it feels while dressing up in these traditional styles.
Right before the P&B session started, the students rushed into the bathrooms to change. Those normally wearing sportswear for jogging around the campus now brought us their new looks. We couldn’t help smiling to each other in our new clothes.
Our beautiful female teachers and many young ladies looked very charming in their traditional Chinese dresses. A few young ladies wore qipao with various floral-print designs, which brought those wonderful blossoms to life. Some other ladies wore hanfu, which appeared in China more than three thousand years ago. Their special designs and colors made them look so elegant that I couldn’t move my eyes away.
The boys also looked decent! One young gentlemen dressed up in mianfu. Do you know what? The very same style of clothing was worn by Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of a unified China, with a much chubbier tummy though. Some boys wore the traditional Tang Dynasty clothes, with some bright colors and unique charm. Another boy wore a Zhongshan suit, which made him look very serious.
All the teachers, boys and girls from the seventh and eighth grades looked fabulous with in their traditional clothes. We could easily map some of the clothes to different dynasties, various minorities, old Shanghai styles, and kung fu masters. When we walked around, talking to various people, it was like we had stepped through a time machine.
During lunch time Mr. Ni in his Tang suit, our charming teachers, and the students took a group picture to capture the wonderful moment. We hope that everyone will ‘Enlighten your heart. Embrace the world.’
