Grade 9 Assembly: My USAD Experience

During the Tuesday morning assembly, Wendy Tan from 9(3) delivered a speech to the whole grade about her experience in the United States Academic Decathlon (USAD). USAD is an international competition devoted to advancing students’ studies in 10 academic fields: arts, music, essay writing, public speaking, interviewing, economics, math, social science, literature, and science. The competition has a different theme each year, and the theme of 2018’s was ‘Africa’. Competitors could compete in teams of nine or as individuals. The China Finals Round was held in February this year, in Guangzhou. The best competitors then qualified to participate in the International Finals, held in the USA.

Through her speech, Wendy passed on information about the competition’s difficulty, requirements for students, and what she gained from the experience. Because the tests’ contents are based on 7 resource guides, USAD is not only an energy-consuming competition; it also requires much patience from its competitors. But through this competition, they can learn a great deal more, become acquainted with more and more talented people, and feel the pleasure of team work. All a pretty worthwhile experience. As Wendy said, the USAD is hard and time consuming, but the more you put in, the more you get out.
