Today, the 5th and 6th graders welcomed an important learning topic– health. We learned that health is composed of three main parts– sleeping, exercise, and food. How can we spend the right amount of time on each of them?

During the first part of the Youth Development class, we stayed in our classrooms and made notes on each of the three parts with help from our teachers. In the beginning, we viewed some statistics about sleep quality, and came to the conclusion that the best number of hours to sleep to per night is about ten hours. Many students discovered that they never get enough sleep!

Then, we discussed the types of exercise we practice daily. Basketball, soccer, and badminton were all popular, and most students reached the minimum exercising length– one hour per day. Last but not least, we came to food. We split all kinds of food into the five major five categories– grains, dairies, fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Of course, there is another type: junk food. We are told that the five types ought to be always taken, but never junk!

For the other part of YD, the basketball court greeted us. A lot of different activities were waiting for us to participate in, such as basketball, hula-hoops, a speed relay, and more. The goal was to indicate to us how exercise makes us stronger and healthier. Also, the classes competed with each other in a game where we sorted food by types. This was to help consolidate what we had learned indoors.

To conclude, I can safely say that students of both grades enjoyed learning about health and having fun activities. We will use our knowledge to reinforce our habits!
