Puxi Grade 5 Youth Development: Physical Health (Boys)
Puxi Grade 5 Youth Development: Physical Health (Boys)
We like our Youth Development classes. Last Thursday, we (the boys!) were elated and hopeful, because we were going out to exercise. We were going to learn how to keep ourselves healthy and fit during puberty!
As we trooped into Room 107, faces light with happiness, we learned about how to maintain a good sleeping pattern. We put our 3-day sleeping time data together and calculated the class average sleeping time. Guess what, we only got an average of 7.54 hours of sleep each day. We learned that a 5 to 12 year old should get an average of 9 hours of sleep each day! If you are preparing for a test, perhaps you should not study late into the night, because deep sleep can refresh your memory, and will probably make your test score better. Then, we learned about how to maintain a healthy diet. We should each get 5 to 8 helpings of dairy products, 2 to 3 helpings of meat, 1 to 2 helpings of sugar, 2 to 3 helpings of nuts, and 7 to 8 helpings of veggies per day. The sporty boys, like me, fulfilled this requirement completely, but the others weren’t so happy.
After the 7th period started, we walked lightheartedly up towards the Primary Section basketball court. There, we took part in a range of activities. We started at the food relay. We had to put the food on a card into a basket so that it goes into its correct category. Then, we competed in a couch relay. There are two couches, and we had to step onto each one by pulling the other forwards. We won by one second! Next, we learned martial arts. Mr. Ferron taught us several basic moves. We even got to hit one another (with gloves and protection)! Then, it was running time. We ran for our lives to stop the 6th graders from overtaking us. Finally, we had the time of our lives playing basketball.
We were sweating all over, but still ran enthusiastically towards our classroom. It was quite an interesting day, and everybody poured out of the classrooms together, having learned the fun and importance of exercising.
