Grades 7: A Special History Lesson
Grades 7: A Special History Lesson
Poetry sent by a Tang breeze…
…rhythm sent from the heart of the Han.
Let’s hear a little about a special history lesson held in Grade 7.
On March 23rd the primary school auditorium was full of traditional Chinese cultural Melodious works of calligraphy told the history of generations, and elaborately carved paper-cuttings adorned the walls. Ink, paper, pens, and stones, sat on every table. The Director of the Junior Middle School Mr. Ni, dressed in a red Tang suit, began the lesson by drawing his own elegant Chinese characters.
During the Tang Dynasty, cultural prosperity and an open society drew visitors to China from all four points of the compass. Tang poetry was brilliant and all-inclusive. Director Ni recited two Tang poems, ‘Spring Dawn’ and ‘Spring Rain’, and then compared some of the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western poetry. Throughout the entire history of Chinese civilization, Chinese characters have drawn a common thread. Director Ni began by talking about the ancient writings found on the Oracle Bones, and then ran through the evolution of Chinese characters. Through calligraphy, one can beautifully illustrate Chinese characters. One stroke at a time, it is possible to recreate a little piece of history. Finally, Director Ni taught the students and foreign teachers present how to write their own calligraphy.
This was a special history lesson. The students explored the profundity of Chinese culture, and had much to take away from this unique experience.
