Pudong Grade 1: Partner Reading

Studies have proved that by reading and being read to, students can improve significantly in their literacy level either in their native language or in their second language. During Personal Growth class on March 20th, the G1-G4 students of SHSID’s Pudong campus experienced such a literacy improvement opportunity. All of the Grade 1 students exchanged with grade four students and shared their reading experiences with who they had barely met before, despite attending the same school. The students did more than talking of course. The older children provided fluent reading strategies as a model for the lower grade kids, and simultaneously the Grade 1 students helped improve the narrators’ read-aloud skills as the audience. At first, students were all nervous by sitting next to some ‘strangers’, however, when the reading began, everyone enjoyed this special PG lesson so much.
