Basketball tournament Review on Saturday

After another trip to the JrNBA finals last semester, the SHSID varsity Boys Basketball Team entered the offseason with their focus on rebuilding and developing the younger players of the future, since many of the team’s core players from last season- including captain Alex Chang, Andrew Liu, AJ Sun, Christian Chu, Simon Fan, Ming Liu and Jason Hu- will all graduate at the end of the year.

Over the weekend SHSID hosted the first Shanghai School Sports Association (SSSA) U19 basketball tournament of the new semester. Teams included SHSID Varsity, SUIS Gubei, YK Pao, HD Ningbo, LFS and the SHSID Junior varsity team that features players like Jun and Henry Li, Calvin Guo, Jason Yoo and other young players that are hopefuls to make the varsity team next school year.

After the conclusion of the group games players competed in a 3pt competition and skills challenge. Gogo Feng (HDNB) won the 3pt competition, beating out Alex Chang (SHSID) in the finals, whereas in the skills challenge AJ Sun (SHSID) barely beat Joshua Chien (SUISGB) by less than a second to with the trophy and free t-shirt!

In the semi finals of the tournament SHSID Varsity beat LFS comfortably to face a familiar foe, the SUIS Gubei Grizzlies in the championship game. After jumping out to a large lead on the Grizzlies, the visiting squad crawled back into the game against a young Stallions line-up. A costly turnover with 9 second left in the game gave SUIS a chance at a lay-up to win the game at the buzzer. They were fouled with 2 seconds left in regulation with a chance to take the lead at the FT line. The opposition went 1 for 2 at the line, sending the game into overtime. The Grizzlies drew first blood in the extra stanza as Joshua Chien converted on a tough and-1 finish. The Stallions would eventually take the lead and the trophy after big shots from Alex Chang and Andrew Liu.
