Puxi Grade 5: First Aid Competition
Puxi Grade 5: First Aid Competition
During the Youth Development class of Thursday the 8th of March, we had a Wound Wrapping competition in Room 213. By the time the first bell rang, everybody had already showed up in class, looking very excited. Then teacher started to explain the rules. The rules were that you had to tightly wrap the ‘wound’ and wrap it in the correct way, otherwise the gauge would come loose easily. There were two people representing each class, one model and one wrapper. Every group had 30 seconds to finish wrapping one wound. Then two judges would come around and look at your wrap and give it a score. Your overall score would be the average score given by the two judges.
First, the judges let us wrap the head. It was very challenging. Because of the wound’s location and its round shape, we had to use some special techniques to fix the gauge. When time was up, some people hadn’t finished and some people’s gauges had fallen off. Next, the judges let us wrap an eye. This was even harder because in order to to wrap only one eye, we had to put the gauge on at an angle. Again, some people messed up, but some did a great job. Lastly, the judges summed up our performance and mentioned some key points people usually ignore.
Meanwhile, other students were doing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) in their homerooms. The teachers first showed us the right positions: stack two hands together, straighten your arms, and press down on the chest on the correct position. Press one second at a time, and so on. Then the students started to try and get a feel for it. When we were pressing down on the model’s chest, there would be a clicking sound every time we did the pressing move correctly.
It was really meaningful and fun for us as we learnt how to save people’s lives under emergency circumstances. If more and more people learn these skills, there would definitely be a lot more people whose lives are saved. We should start teaching people all around us, like our moms and dads! Let’s spread it, from us, from now on!
