Grades 9-10:Opening Ceremony

During the first period of February 23rd, the opening ceremony for G9-10 was held in the Grand Auditorium. To kick it off, a short video produced by SHSID’s students with pictures of main events and activities of last semester was shown.

Then Ms. Liu, director of Grade 9 and 10, greeted the students and urged them to prepare for the challenges of the new semester. She introduced 8 different types of intelligence: Musical, Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalistic. Using her own explanation and some examples, Ms. Liu encouraged the students to pursue their own interests and advantages in specific kinds of intelligence. She mentioned her former student who was good at make-up but poor at chemistry. Ms. Liu said she really appreciated that girl’s talent so she even invited that student to apply her make-up for her before the prom. Later, the student indeed realized that make-up was her true passion, and so she found her ideal major and career. Through this instance, Ms. Liu pointed out that students can improve themselves in academic study and other areas by choosing the right courses for the future.

Then, Ms. Zhang from Grade 9 congratulated several students who received awards in the last semester. Subsequently, Emily Jiang from 9(1) expressed her opinion on the responsibility of making the right choices as a high school student. She claimed that personal interest should be the basis of one’s decisions, instead of blindly following others. After a brief summary of the 10th graders’ past achievements and future plans by Ms Yu from Grade 10, Teresa Ma from 10(5) shared some of her experiences from HWeek and encouraged all the students to challenge themselves to achieve more of their potential.

Following on from that came a few awards and recognitions, such as for service group members, excellent PA leaders, star clubs, etc. In a change in style from previous years, Ms. Liu played some joyous Chinese music and the ceremony ended with New Year well-wishes from by several teachers.
