SHSID Foreign Teacher Winter Orientation

Welcome Back! On the morning of February 20th, after basking in much needed rest and relaxation over the Chinese New Year break, SHSID’s foreign teachers returned to campus for their winter orientation. The purpose of the orientation is to provide teachers with a smooth and helpful transition into the second semester by encouraging discussion and an open exchange of ideas between all.

The morning started off with a brief meeting of all teachers, which served to welcome everyone to the new semester and to communicate relevant school announcements and updates, as well as up-coming notable events.

Following this meeting, the teachers broke off from the larger group and each chose two out of four smaller professional development group sessions to attend. Each session was individually run by a primary ormiddle school teacher and each had a very unique and interesting focus. In these sessions, the teachers discussed and shared resources and tools with one another and walked away with many new and useful tips to use in their classrooms in the coming semester! Not only did the newer teachers find the sessions to be informative and beneficial, but veteran teachers were also able to consider ways to move their classes into new directions.

To conclude the morning, the foreign teachers attended a psychology talk led by SHSID’S high school AP psychology teachers. In this meeting, the teachers were introduced to several concepts of cognitive psychology related to learning and memory and learned about ways to apply the psychological concepts to the classroom to improve student performance. The teachers walked away from this meeting with not only strategies to use in their classrooms, but also resources and recommended readings related to the concepts discussed to further develop their understanding in this area.

With a freshened set of skills, our foreign teachers are beginning the second semester with a spring in their step!
