8th Grade Service Learning Reflection Meeting Series Report 3
8th Grade Service Learning Reflection Meeting Series Report 3
Hepu Charity service learning group, founded by Richard from 8(2), hosts activities at Minhang Library. Using the form of a video, Richard told the audience about his experiences as a service learner and provider. Through storytelling, Richard and his group came to understand how hard it was to be teachers, and become teachers as well. Through working as volunteers, these service learners gained experience with collecting and classifying books.
Right after the video was played, Oliver and Brandon from 8(8) went up to present their service learning program— the News Group. Through keeping fellow students informed, Brandon and Oliver gained writing skills, new insight about the school and its students, learned about world events, and became better at overcoming challenges. The two hope to continue their passion by continuously managing the group.
Next up was CCSG, the Campus Cafeteria Service Group. Managed by Penny and Vivian from 8(3), this group helps to clean up the Middle School cafeteria after lunch. Through this group, the two girls, as well as their group, have learned how to be responsible. At the same time, they also helped to create a better and cleaner cafeteria for all Middle School students.
Following them was Anya from 8(4), who founded the Shanghai Healing Home service learning team, which provides love for orphaned and medically disabled children. Shanghai Healing Home itself is an organization that provides help, medical care, but more importantly, a home for these poor kids. Anya, who thought they deserved even more love and care, wanted to help these children with the best of her abilities. A few challenges that she met when doing so, however, was how to overcome nervous feelings against the children’s defects, to understand them, and how to play well while being safe. She solved all of these problems by 1) listening to the instructors on who the kids were, as well as how to play with them, then 2) carefully observing the kids’ behavior. Through this experience, Anya learned how to care for the children, be responsible, and also to be glad of her own conditions and situation.
After Anya came TBLF, or Textbook Lost and Found. Founded by Alicia from class 8(4), this group serves to find and return lost textbooks to their owners. Of course, this service was very helpful and appreciated, but there were some difficulties that the group had to overcome. For example, when there were no names on books, Alicia and her group members would often have to trouble over where to return the books. Mr. Ni, however, usually helped to solve this problem. As Alicia stated, the overall goal of the group was to help others save their money and effort over textbooks, and to help others, as well as themselves, become more responsible.
Founded by Sooji from 8(10), the Korean Translation Group translates school articles into Korean to help Korean parents, especially those who don't understand either English or Chinese. Sooji told her audience it’s hard for these parents to know much about what is going on at SHSID as a result of this language barrier. To change this, she wanted to help these parents, and thus this service learning group was created.
Next, came Lillian and Jiayi from 8(7). Managed by Lillian, the Peeka Library service learning group tells stories to young children. Interestingly, this speech took the form of an interview, with Jiayi asking Lillian questions about why she joined this service learning group, how she managed it, etc. Through this activity, they learned to be persistent when in trouble (e.g. when kids cry).
Finally, the meeting ended with a video made by Dora from 8(1) and Nina from 8(2) from video group. Throughout the video, Nina and Dora presented their experience, the challenges they had to face, and how they solved them. The biggest problem being time management, Nina and Dora hope to solve this by inviting more students to come and join the club.

While taking over and carrying on excellent programes from last year, 8th graders this year tried hard looking for new ways to help society. Many of the new service learning teams this year showed great ingenuity as well as sincere concern for society. Through combining service with different activities, our students’ sense of social responsibility is enhanced and their understanding about society is deepened. While contributing to society, students also undergo great personal growth.
