8th Grade Service Learning Reflection Meeting Series Report 2

In the service learning reflection meeting, the fifth group of presenters that came up were Emily, Vicky, and Daisy, all from 8(9), each introducing a service learning group. Emily first introduced the Reading Buddy service learning group, which usually takes place during morning P&B. She discussed a challenge that she met was that when the children become too excited, and hard to manage. They would stop listening, and would not respond when questions were asked. Through this experience, however, she learned how hard it was being a teacher, and learned, eventually, how to be one as well.

Next came Vicky. She introduced the club Simply Bakery, which sells baked goods to earn and donate money. As one of the leaders, she presented a challenge that she often encountered— missing people. She was finally able to deal with this by changing the distribution of work among present members.

Finally, it was Daisy’s turn. A member of the Photography Group, she shared with the audience how she learned to professionally take photos, and how to be patient when taking them. She also learned how to appreciate the beauty of certain things, and to make friends who have similar interests.

The service learning group called Charity Clips then showed a video explaining how they benefited while serving the community. Aiming to help not just the school’s students but the entire world, they have gained much along the way. They have learned many things on subjects they like, going deeper than in class because they are driven by their own motivation. One challenge, however, was the competing time schedules of school work and service learning. The group eventually solved this by incorporating their gained knowledge from making the videos to their own school lives.

The 7th group of speakers were Amy from 8(11) and Cathy from 8(8), who created the club Furry Vibes, a group that aims to help stray cats. As cat lovers themselves, Amy and Cathy called in several others who were willing to help these cute animals. The group hosted several activities, such as charity sales to earn money to buy cat food and shelter, as well as to donate to animal rescue organizations. The first sale, however, did not go well. As they recalled, they did not hand in a proposal, and thus did not have a food safety notice. Of course, the sale was not able to go on, but this lesson allowed them to guarantee a successful sale the next time.

Felix from 8(11), who founded the Liu Hai Su Art Museum service learning group, went up next. As he stated, the founding mission of this group was to serve the community, and to build a better society that appreciates the things around them. He then presented several activities that the group participated in, with the most challenging as being a tour guide. He said that it was hard to write the speech scripts, and to capture the audience’s attention within only ten seconds. The group eventually surmounted these problems, however, by focusing more on the story elements of events, rather then the dry and hard facts.

Following Felix were Emma and Hannah all from 8(2). Together, they founded the service learning program called Next Door Buddy. Together, the two girls help their community by giving children free English lessons. They learned how hard it is to be a teacher, keeping children interested while teaching useful knowledge at the same time. Despite these troubles, it is rewarding to see the parents, and especially the kids, beginning to treat them as trustable friends.

The group for Sheshan observatory was next. Tommy and John from 8(6), who presented the speech, gave the audience an overview of the entire activity. This service learning program not only provided students with knowledge of astronomy, but also helped planetarium visitors.

Yang Yang from 8(8) founded two groups: Voice from Beyond and the Long Museum volunteer group. Yangyang loves singing and musicals, so she decided to combine her interest with service learning. This great idea was supported by many other students, so they formed the group “Voice from Beyond” to deliver happiness through singing. In the Long Museum, which holds famous pieces of art, Yang Yang and her group worked as tour guides for the visitors. Through these two service learning groups, Yang Yang learned time management, as well as how to control her own emotions.
