8th Grade Service Learning Reflection Meeting Series Report 1

On Thursday, January 4th , the 8th graders’ Service Learning Reflection took place in the Primary School Auditorium. Hosted by Ms. Shen, this meeting consisted of 17 speeches and 3 videos, each giving service learning experiences, challenges, and reflections.

The first speaker up was Luna from 8(11). As a star member of many service learning groups, she explained why she joined the Korean translation group (for its intended services), Voices from Beyond (for her will to use her talents to help others), Furry Vibes (for her love of animals), and Banana Heads (for its attractive name). She then talked about her challenges, with the biggest being time management. Solving this problem by creating time schedules, she learned how to effectively manage her time. She stated that she feels proud to be a service learner and provider.

The next group that went was the Banana heads. Founded by Lilian from 8(1), Lauren from 8(10), and Annabelle8(3), this group earns charity money from various activities, then donates it to organizations such as the Shanghai Healing Home and Tianling retirement house. One major improvement for this group which the presenters mentioned was the aspect of organization. They hope to keep members active by notifying them through social media.

The third speech was presented by Peter Zhu, who shared his experiences of service learning through explaining two groups he joined—the Long Museum, and the SHSID Gazette, which he created himself. Through being a tour guide at the Long Museum, Peter was able to improve his speaking abilities even further. Through the SHSID Gazette—which he stated was his favorite— Peter understood the importance of, and learned how to achieve, time management. Presented with multiple challenges such as formatting, editing, and lost documents, Peter as well as his group learned how to more effectively use given tools to save precious hours. At the same time, he and his group were earning service learning hours while helping to build a better community around them.

After Peter came Roots and Shoots, the service learning club with the longest history in our school. Currently managed by Anita8(2) and Eileen8(1), this group serves to spread environmental awareness, promote the club itself outside school, and to help with the Million Tree Project (where volunteers plant trees in barren areas using donated money). To reach these goals, Roots and Shoots participated in many activities such as charity fair to raise money. They also used a small area behind the primary school building to garden certain plants, and raise environmental awareness.

During the interval between the third and forth speeches, awards were given out to cooperating institutions who have all contributed greatly to the service learning programs presented.
