Puxi Grade 5: Career Day Visit - Shanghai Meiji

We 5(3) and 5(5) students had our career visit last Thursday. We went to the Meiji Co., Ltd in Songjiang District.

On the way to the factory every one was excited. After 40 minutes, we arrived at the factory. As soon as we got off the bus, we ran straight to the entrance. A staff member asked us to wash hands at a row of sinks before visiting.

Then we entered the reception hall with 2 big screens. The staff member introduced the history and products of Meiji and showed us a video about the history of chocolate.

The video told the story of how coco beans were first found in South America before the Europeans came and brought the coco beans to their home in the west and started making hot coco. Originally the name of hot coco meant bitter water. We also learnt how the factory made Meltykisses. First, they crush the coco beans until they become really smooth. Then, they add coco fat to enhance the taste. Finally, they mix in sugar, put the mixture in molds and freeze them.

After watching the video, we went up to the 2ndfloor where we can see how the chocolate were produced by machines through the windows. The one that I remembered the most was a machine that could suck up and remove candy wrappers that fail to wrap up any chocolate.

When we came back to the hall in the first floor, we started to eat the chocolate! The chocolate treats were perfectly cut into cubes and very tasty.

Before we left the chocolate factory, we took a group picture. We learned a lot from the visit and hope to have more activities like this.
