Chinese Creative Writing Course in SHSID Middle School

This is the second year for Chinese creative writing courses in SHSID, dating back to the formation of the Sinan Literature Club. There are six students in the creative writing class. These students are all interested in writing, and their Chinese levels differ from Non-native Chinese H level to Native Chinese H level. The teaching plan they will progress thusly: “reading-writing-commenting-experiencing”. The contents cover both Chinese literature and English literature, short stories and poems, and even non-fiction and beyond.

The whole system mainly consists two phases. For the first phase, we try to arouse students’ awareness of vocabulary. Students can choose the vocabulary from the poems they read or find the vocabulary around the campus. Let’s say, a kind of tree, or a bird’s singing, the shadow of sunshine, etc. In order to encourage students realize the magic of vocabulary, students are also encouraged to write poems with the vocabulary they find.

The second phase is for reading classics and writing short stories. Both extensive reading and intensive reading are required. We also prepared some warm-up games for the students. For example, students were challenged to match the name of a novel with certain the famous opening sentences.
