Grades 9-10: Parents’ School – “Your Future, Your Call”

Our High School students are in now in a significant period of their lives, in which both their character and habits are developing. Luckily for them, the students have a lot of choices laid before them, since SHSID provides all kinds of courses and an abundant range of activities. It is crucial for students to make the right choice to choose the best fit course and activities to develop their strongest abilities and special personal qualities. To help students know themselves better and to cooperate with their parents more effectively, SHSID High School organized a series of Parents’ School Programs. On the afternoon of December 28th, parents of Grade 9-10 came to the Zhongxing building for Ms. Hao Jiang, the IB coordinator. She gave a lecture entitled ‘Your Future, Your Call’.

The lecture began with a group activity for the parents. They were asked to cooperated with each other to draw a beautiful flower. During the process, parents tried their best to contribute to the team. The point Ms. Hao Jiang wanted to make was that on the foundation of collaboration, everyone’s contribution can make the team better.

The second part of the lecture dealt with ‘self-evaluation’. Everyone has a different standard for self-evaluation, and what matters is the standard best fit for oneself. The results of self-evaluation can influence all aspects of one’s life. For example, every question in the test paper is in fact a special stage for students. By analyzing any mistakes made during tests and trying to avoid them next time, students make progress not just in their grades, but also in their habits.

Then came another activity. In this, the parents were asked to imagine themselves as admission officers from top universities. What were the three qualities that they expected young applicants to have? The parents discussed this thoroughly, and all came to the conclusion that students’ persistence, self-control, and self-motivation

may factor heavily in the strength of both their personal development and their university applications. If the students set a goal and persistently put effort into it, there is a high probability that they will succeed. It was emphasized that the crucial part is not just good grades, but most importantly the ability students developed during the whole procedure, which is going to benefit them lifelong.
