Grades 11-12:2017 SHSID Alumni Sharing Session
This December, our seniors that have just graduated are back to share some of their college experiences. The alumni came from universities such as UCLA, Brown University, the University of Toronto, and so on. On the 22nd, Mark Wu introduced to us the Architectural Association’s School of Architecture in London. Having graduated from SHSID in June, Mark has now finished his first term in AA.
He started by introducing some of the basics about AA, such as its location, courses and the RIBA certificate that it offers. The four courses, he said, include Media Studies, Technical Studies, History and Theory Studies, and Studio, each with different projects, workloads and tutors. Media Studies presents to the students various courses which they can select based on their interests, such as drawing and photography. Technical Studies, on the other hand, consists of “insane” projects such as making a 30cm x 30cm box out of whatever material a group chooses. History and Theory Studies is where students gain knowledge about architectural history and theories, and the studio is where students spend time to make models and products.
Then, he went on to introduce the various bizarre traditions and characteristics of AA, giving us a better understanding of daily life at the school. AA is a democratic association where the president of the school is chosen by the student body, and there are no paper tests, monthlies, midterms, or finals in AA; rather, their works are to be evaluated by judges during the “Final Table”.
Then, Mark presented to us the works that he had created throughout the semester, including his hand drawings, computer drawings and 3D models, as well as a video showing the “Final Table” in action.
Overall, Mark said, AA is a truly amazing place where students’ ideas and tutors’ ideas are valued equally, and where students can become open-minded and explore new aspects of themselves.
