Puxi Grade 5: Charity Lecture from Sunrise Library
Puxi Grade 5: Charity Lecture from Sunrise Library
On December 11th, during lunch break, students from the classes of 5th grade went to hear a charity lecture. The lecture was given by an employee of Sunrise Library, a foundation that will use the money we donated during the Charity Fair to build libraries for students and schools that are isolated from urban areas, and schools in poverty.
Sunrise Library was formed in 2005, and since then has allowed hundreds of poor children to have access to literature. Their main goal is to let all children who live in severe conditions read and write. If a school needs help, they will be the first ones alarmed. They have built many libraries in Henan province and Anhui province, increasing China’s overall literacy rate.
However, they did encounter a problem at one time: the students they were helping refused to learn and read. The problem was the internet! Every day, when school ended, they would borrow some money and go to the public internet bar and play video games all day. As this bad habit spread, it severely damaged the opportunity for students to learn and caused thousands of Yuan to be wasted on books that nobody read. Since so many of the students didn’t care about learning, the teachers were also very worried about their future. It also badly damages the reputation of the Sunrise Foundation, so all parties agreed to have reading classes to pick up the students’ passion and interest.
Starting from 2010, Sunrise launched their reading activity. After the teachers were trained, they were immediately sent to work. Years passed and many students
started again reading. This wonderful idea changed how students thought about reading. Now, each class has a mini library in their classroom that can hold up to 150 books!
From the lecture, the students learned that their charity fair can really help some people, especially other kids like them. We are very happy that 6 mini libraries will be built up in two different schools next year using our donation, 30,000 yuan. And we hope these libraries will help those students to enjoy reading!
