20th Micius Salon “Gravitational Wave Conference”

During the afternoon of December 18th, students from the local and international divisions of Shanghai High School participated the 20th Micius Salon “Gravitational Wave Conference”, held in the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies, at the China University of Science & Technology.

The three winners of the 2017 Nobel Physics Prize presented an amazing report during the conference. Professor Joe Webber introduced the basics of LIGO and gravitational waves. The experimentalist Barry Barnish focused on the mechanisms that helped LIGO’s infrastructure hit its precise benchmark. Dr. Kip Thorne told the story of how he evolved from a dubious boy into the doctor that dedicated his career to the cause of detecting gravitational waves. Meanwhile, he also imagined the future and talked about the infinite potential LIGO has.

As the scientific advisor of the movie Interstellar, Dr. Throne also encouraged us- the next generation- to dedicate ourselves to scientific innovation. In the Q&A section, the three professors all showed the extraordinary love and passion they have towards their field of study.
