6th Grade Career Day: A Visit to Shanghai Institute of Measurement and Testing Technology

On November 30th, we went on a field trip to a place called SIMT, a place all about measurement, testing technology, measuring the tested technology, and testing technology by measuring things. First, we went to a room with many electricity meters. The more electricity used, the higher the meter will go. Second, we went to a 50 meter long testing lab. There was this device that ran on tracks and measures how long it has travelled. The track’s length and width had to be precise, so the temperature had to be at the same degree at all times. There were also 4 devices that shot out red lasers, and the device would calculate how far the device is from the red dot caused by the laser by seeing how long it takes for the laser to bounce off of the wall and back to the device. After that, we went to a room that half-absorbs sound waves, which can be useful for measuring the amount of sound caused by a single device. However, there was also a fully-absorbent room, where the floor was covered with iron wires. It was really hard to talk and hear in the sound-absorbent room. This is perhaps the quietest room in Shanghai. We also looked at an apple tree whose parent tree was the tree that inspired Isaac Newton to discover gravity. It was a very interesting field trip!
