Grade 12: Bilingual Debate Tournament
Grade 12: Bilingual Debate Tournament
On December 5th, 2017 afternoon, the exchange of carefully planned arguments from the two teams of debaters marked the end of the long and intense Bilingual Debate Tournament. It took more than two months for the students from both SHS and SHSID to progress from the preliminary round to the final round. Countless students astonished the judges and their fellow students with their exceptional thinking capacity and the skillfulness of advancing their arguments.
The final round took place in the ‘black box’ of the drama center. The whole final round was filmed. Numerous students and teachers filled the seats of the room. In
front of the debaters were 9 judges. They were teachers from both SHS and SHSID, all of considerable reputation in the study of language and debate. There were also two special guests from the International Channel Shanghai (ICS).
As it was the first Bilingual Debate Tournament involving students from both campuses, an exceptional amount of care was devoted to this event by both the students and the teachers. The topic for the debate varied from education policies to ethical concerns regarding scientific technologies. There were also teachers who volunteered as coaches for the debaters and provided advice for them. However, there were also some shortcomings to this event as well. There were issues of incomplete translation of the prompts that caused misunderstanding between the teams. These issues could be considered more thoroughly next year to provide a more objective platform on which the skills of the students could be better assessed. However, it was truly amazing to see the students from both campuses interacting as a team and exchanging ideas.
