Grade 10: Fight procrastination and increase time management skills

During week 13-14, all the 10th graders had a series of activities which aim to help students fight procrastination and improve their time management skills. Here’s a breakdown of those activities.

Part 1: A Class Discussion on How to Overcome Nomophobia

On the first day, under the auspices of the homeroom teachers, all the classmates conducted a class discussion on how to overcome nomophobia and use one’s cellphone properly. First, the teachers listed some symptoms of cell phone addiction. For example, carrying one’s cellphone excessively, staring at the screen incessantly, over-relying on social networks, and so on. The students have said they have found themselves not so far off many of these symptoms, and have the determination to change this state. After discussion, they put forward some feasible suggestions

based on their own experience. For example, they stipulated could set phone-time quotas, uninstall entertaining apps or games, and conduct more face-to-face communication with friends and family members.

Part 2: Mini Play: Procrastination is a Monster

On the second day, each class organized a mini play that demonstrated the students' common procrastination scenes. For example, in Class 10(7), all of the monitors presented a scene which all the students were playing video games together, laughing and shouting before the test. Then, the teacher's warning of "5 minutes before the Math test" pulled the students back to reality as all of us hurried to search for their math textbooks and worksheets. They realised that they could do none of the questions and did not understand any of the concepts at all. All of the students stared at each other with despair. At last, one of them suggested praying to God because there was nothing they could do 5 minutes before the test. As a result, all the students failed exams, sad and regretful. This scene seems to reproduce the status of many students before their exams. The class were able to have a laugh and poke fun at themselves, but also reflect on their procrastination symptoms.

Part 3: Class discussion: How to Fight Procrastination

On the third day, each class had a presentation on how to fight procrastination by presenting its harmful effects and helpful advices to deal with it. The classes conducted intense discussions and pointed out some feasible ways. The monitor put all the methods up onto the whiteboard. Some students volunteered to share their time management experience. For example: downloading a time management app, setting earlier deadlines, arranging homework time every day after going home, prioritizing the most important things or activities, and learning with each other, or letting other family members to supervise you, etc.

Part 4: PA Sharing: Do You Have Enough Time?

Some juniors who are studying AP courses came to hold a PA lecture about time management. They introduced how they managed their time wisely every day and gave the 9th and 10th graders some suggestions, such as not being a last-minute person before tests. Hopefully, after this mini workshop, SHSID’s high school students can try to avoid procrastination and finish tasks more efficiently in order to waste less of their own time.
