Grade 9-10:English speech competition

During the CAS periods on the afternoon of November 22nd, the annual 9th-10th grades Speech Competition was held. Among the competitors were talented freshmen and sophomore speakers, including Harry, Janelle, Wendy Kim, Chantel, Drake, Jerick, Mia, and Ken from 9th grade, and Helena, Stephanie Xu, Stephanie, and Lelan from 10th grade. A panel of judges consisting of high school English teachers, parent, and student judges, evaluated the speakers according to their performances.

The competition began with one round of prepared speeches, which discussed various captivating topics. Stephanie Xu commenced the competition with a speech on the Mandela Effect, a large group of people collectively remembering the same false memories. Harry addressed everlasting wisdom, Janelle discussed teenage rebellion, and Wendy Kim discussed teenage anxiety. Stephanie defended the benefits of fandoms, while Helena persuaded us that language is intended to communicate love and positivity, rather than to serve as an outlet for pouring out negative thoughts. Chantel told us about photography and its techniques, and Drake spoke on the issue of people wearing “masks” to fit social standards rather than showing their true colours. Jerick introduced K’nex and what makes it unique from other types of construction pieces, while Mia presented to us the longboard, its history, as well as her own stories with riding it. Ken raised the topic of surreal art and exhibited his own passion for art. The round ended with Lelan’s speech on her experiences with the sport kayaking.

Before the start of the second round, several students performed a skit regarding sonnets. It was a funny, yet informative show—three students introduced the famous poets to their fellow classmate. After the students’ lively performance, the second round of the speech competition officially began. One by one, contestants are each given a different topic. Within minutes, the atmosphere was tense with competition. Despite the challenge of delivering impromptu speeches, all contestants came up with creative and articulate responses.

After a period of intense discussion, the panel of judges selected the winners of the speech competition and the hosts announced the final results. Of the standard level section, Harry, Janelle, and Helena won third place, Stephanie and Wendy won second place, and Ken won first place. Of the higher level section, Chantel, Mia, and Jerick won third place, Drake and Stephanie Xu won second place, and Lelan won first place. Congratulations to all the contestants for their amazing speeches!
