6th Grade Youth Development: How to Be Friends with Negative Emotions

Last week in youth development we learned about negative, positive and neutral coping strategies to help control outbreaks of negative mood, tone, language, and physical violence caused by possible anxiety, stress, or frustration. We participated in discussions, did activities and watched videos to help us learn and understand how we can manage our emotions and what our various feelings can make us do. The activities we did can help students deal with their feelings in their everyday lives.

One helpful method that we used was discussing our feelings and how to handle them as a class. We commented on the videos we watched and discussed common actions we perform when feeling frustrated, stressed, or anxious. We talked about how other’s words

can easily make someone feel depressed and to think before saying unkind words to someone.

Secondly, we watched some helpful videos that helped explain what a sudden outbreak of negativity looks like and how to stay away from situations like that. The first video we watched was a short clip from Inside Out. The video showed how Filey, the main character, got angry with her parents. This taught us what a stressed or frustrated person might look like, and how he/she is thinking inside his/her mind. The second video we watched was a cartoon with a main character named Mojo. In the video, Mojo’s anxiety and pressure got the best of him and he angrily yelled at his friend. This video showed us that words do affect a person’s actions and that you should use more positive ways to release your anger. This is because Mojo almost lost his friend from his rage. From the videos, we learned to consider a person’s feelings before saying negative words to them.

Lastly, we learned common actions people will perform when they are feeling anxious, stressed, or frustrated. We learned that when someone is feeling those negative emotions they will try using negative, positive, or neutral coping strategies to calm themselves. We did an activity in class where we got into groups of 3-5 people and we sorted different coping strategies into 3 categories:Negative, positive, and neutral coping strategies. This will help us to be able to better calm ourselves the next time we feel upset.

In conclusion, last week’s youth development class taught us different coping strategies to help control outbreaks of stress, how to treat each other nicely, and how to prevent negative feelings.
