Grades 9-10: A Visit to the Coca Cola Company
Grades 9-10: A Visit to the Coca Cola Company
It was a rainy day on November 21st. The sky was bleached gray. For SHSID’s students, it was Job Shadow day. However, no matter how heavily it rained, how humid the air was, or how cold the wind blew, nothing could dent the enthusiasm of the group of ninth and tenth graders who were visiting the company which creates the most famous drink in the world: Coca Cola. The students spent an entire day visiting the company, in which they learned about its history, background, and also got a sneak peek of some products which are not yet on the market. Everything in the company was so fascinating that it made all the students gape in awe.
In the morning, students visited the staff workplace. It was incredibly warm and comfortable, and tons of Coca Cola bottles were everywhere. The students were able to build a huge mountain just by piling them up. Staff there first passionately gave a creative presentation about the company’s annual profits, daily work routine, the prizes they won, and then they even performed some magic for the students!
The students were then taught the history of Coca-Cola and also about various concepts in marketing. They learned- to their surprise- that the Coca-Cola Company has already been around for more than a hundred years! Their methods of marketing are very unique when compared with other companies. They follow societal trends and create a special theme for the bottles every year to draw customers in.
Then, it came the highlight of the whole visit: the students were allowed to try some drinks imported from other countries such as Japan, Korea and the US which have not yet entered the Chinese market. Only staff in the research and development department have tasted them so far. The students were all thrilled to feel they were ahead of the rest of the world.
Going into the R&D Center, which is the second largest and most advanced Coca-Cola lab in the whole world. All kinds of colorful drinks appeared before the students’ eyes: juices, smoothies, jelly, etc. No-one could peel their eyes away.
Through this trip to the Coca-Cola Company, the students learned that in a such small and seemingly simple Coca-Cola drink, there is an archaic history, staff’s hard work, and intricate processing. They’ll never look at a can the same way again.
