High School: Economics Department Seminar
High School: Economics Department Seminar
Ms. Zhang Li, the head of Economics department, held a staff seminar on the afternoon of November 23rd.
The main topic of this seminar was about how to explore and restructure the teaching methodologies based on the current teaching to make classes more active and more effective. Firstly, the teachers of different subjects introduced the different class projects during their classes. Zhang Li mentioned the two types of teaching methods she used in IB course, which were in-class real case analysis and the after-class group project, which required students to analyze the competition between two real-life companies. She said that the most students lack the ability to put what they have learned in class into practice.
Thus, it would be beneficial if more discussions of real life cases could be added to class to improve the students’ application abilities. Other teachers then introduced their projects carried out in Grade 9 and Grade 10’s S and H level classes, including international trade and comparison of the living standards of two different countries.
Then, Zhang Li introduced the new IB Economics course. The new assessment methods are very challenging and demanding for students as they require strong knowledge application abilities. The external assessment will involve a number of real life cases. In these, students are asked to analyze and give proper suggestions. Therefore, it is necessary to restructure the teaching methodologies in the G9 and G10 economics classes to better link up to the higher grade IB course. The teachers shared their experience and opinions on this issue, such as how to lead an interactive class environment and the examples and cases they have already used in their classes. There is also specific forum created on the Blackboard online course platform for teachers to share their teaching content and experiences.
