Grade 10: A lecture from Mr Zhao Yiou

On the afternoon of November 15, students from the Chinese H and H+ levels gathered in the Square Hall to attend a lecture of Mr. Yiou Zhao. Mr. Zhao is a famous actor, director, and host in China. It is an honor to invite him to share his working experience and teach us public speaking and acting skills.

Mr. Zhao first discussed the power of language, and he hoped his rich experience could inspire the students. According to him, the prerequisite of moving others is to move ourselves. While communicating with others, a speaker should first have a positive attitude. A speaker must have passion about the topic and the desire to talk about the topic. To convince others to believe the speaker, eye contact is extremely important because looking them directly in their eyes can make the speaker seem more persuasive. Regarding public speaking, externalization is needed to perfect the performance. Furthermore, a speaker should have the ability of open loneliness and self-mockery.

Then the host, Reina, asked some questions about the upcoming speech competition for the students. Mr. Zhao taught the students the correct holding posture of microphones. He also mentioned that the students should all develop the habit of reading since language background is something that must be built. Books about speech are only temporary fixes. Mr. Zhao said that once the emotion is real, even if without fancy words, it is still possible to move the audience.

Finally, students held a Q&A session. Someone was interested in how Mr. Zhao changed his major from becoming a pilot to becoming a director; another asked about the skills of being a host and a journalist. He suggested that being a host should have “sense of shame”, and a journalist should ask precise questions. He gave advice to those who will be performing on stage: listen, see, think, and decide on the stage. He then briefly introduced three major acting factions.

In conclusion, students stood to benefit from this rare opportunity, and learned many useful skills and knowledge of public speaking.
