Grade 8: Sports Meet Awarding Ceremony

On November 16, the sports meet awards ceremony was held. Winners of the sports meet competitions received their medals, and classes received awards for their excellent performances. Classes were eligible to receive tug-of-war, the march-in, posters, and last but not least, the top scoring class, which was won by class 8(1). Winners of the individual competitions received medals for running, high jump, long jump, medicine ball, three-legged race, and the relay race while other students cheered loudly. The students’ energy and vigor for the sports meet reappeared during the ceremony as they chanted and clapped for the winners. It was as if they were in the sports meet, with the cheerfulness and delight, it was as if they were in the sports meet!

Being a student-athlete is an incredible feat, as students have to manage their heavy workload at school while participating in practices for their sports. Hannah Zhou, a gold medalist from 8(2), ran in the 100-meter girls-race.

“During the competition, I had butterflies in my stomach and I felt sick. But, the rush of adrenaline did give me a boost and I was relieved of the nauseating feeling after those 14 seconds were over.”

She was the winner of the race, and described the ceremony as a wonderful experience.

“After the awarding ceremony, I just said, ‘yay!’”

Ophelia Ke 8(1), a student athlete and a winner of three gold medals, said that she felt “awkward but proud… I’m so happy!” Every student who tried their best deserves an award, so great job everyone!

Afterwards, Mr. Ni gave a short speech congratulating the medalists in the sports meet and informing the classes of the upcoming pizza parties. He approved of the duties done this week and informed the students of some details they could improve on, such as eating in the classroom.

“Eighth graders must set a good example for the whole middle school,” he said, “however, students have exceeded their limits in the sports meet, good work!”

Congratulations to not only the winners, but to every student that participated in the sports meet! Excellent work and see you all next time!
