Grade 6:A Spectacular Debate
Grade 6:A Spectacular Debate
A spectacular debate, one of the biggest events in Ms. Tuttle’s History class was recently held. There was a 3 sided debated between: Britain, France and the ‘good old’ USA. The purpose of this debate was to help the students learn more about the treaty of Versailles and how the countries agreed and disagreed with the terms of treaty.
We were divided into 3 different groups which represented 3 countries. Desks were positioned into 3 different sides and the top hats of the British delegates offered a rare glimpse into the past. When it began, the debate was focused on one question: ‘what should we do to the armies of Germany?’ The French side was the first to give a suggestion. They insisted on taking away the German’s army since it had destroyed other countries during WW1. As the saying goes: “Deal with a man as he deals with you.” Britain and USA objected to the idea instantly, saying it was like a bad suggestion made by a villain lying on the street. They felt that France was too full of vengeance towards Germany, and that leaving Germany some soldiers for defense would be a good idea. Thus, solving one question led to another- how many should we let them keep? France held onto the idea that the Germans should decrease their army almost entirely. At last, with immense pressure, Britain and USA agreed with each other and France had to obey.
Moreover, we went through a lot of problems arose later. For example, we discussed, “what shall we do to the Rhineland?” or “How should Germany’s colonies be divided?” These questions would inevitably involve some funny insults. When the British debater said that French were a little bit selfish, the French debater replied with this,” You do not want another world war to happen, do you?” Each one took it seriously as if we were literally doing a great debate.
The activity helped the students learn how things were solved back then and how debaters tried their best for the sake of their own country.
