Puxi Grade One: Charity Donation to Shanghai Healing Home

On November 2nd, all of the first graders at the Puxi campus successfully carried out their first charity fair and raised quite a bit of money in the process! In addition to raising funds, they also collected a lot of clothing, toys, and books to donate. As planned, all of the items and money collected will be donated to the Shanghai Healing Home (SHH).

On November 13th, Mr. Aaron, the Assistant Director, Daily Operations Lead of SHH came to SHSID to give a brief introduction speech about SHH to the first graders and to accept the donations. From his speech, the first graders learned that SHH is a non-profit foster home assisting the local Chinese Children’s Welfare Institute by providing pre and post-surgical care to abandoned Chinese orphan babies who were born with surgically correctable deformities. Currently there are 28 babies being cared for at SHH and older children are participating in classes every day with volunteers.

The most impressive story that was told during the ceremony was about a boy and girl at SHH. They are best friends, but the boy did not have arms when he was born. The girl always helps him eat his meals and snacks. The beautiful photo that was shown of the two children with sweet smiles on their faces moved everyone. At the end when the first graders were asked why the girl helps the boy, they answered loudly: because they are best friends!

When the introduction speech concluded, 12 representatives from the first grade donated the 25, 000RMB to SHH.

As you enter the homepage of the SHH website, the striking headline, Give a Child a Chance, must influence everyone. All children are the hope of our society and our country. These children are not only the ones studying at our school, but also the kids at SHH. Every child should equally be cared for and have access to education. When the Puxi first graders gave the donated to SHH, they gave them in hopes that things will get better for the children at SHH.

The charity fair and the donation ceremony were part of SHSID’s CME education. The teachers and the school want the students to learn how to care for others, respect others, and learn to offer help when others need it.
