Grades 9-10: An Integrated Professional Development for Interdisciplinary Classrooms

Greatness is bound to follow when dedicated educators come together to brainstorm opportunities for students to grow and develop their skills and talents, so it should be expected that tremendous progress was made during Monday’s 9 & 10th grade teachers’ professional development session. Grade 9-10 Liaison Josh Pickart lead the staff in a brainstorming session to establish what an interdisciplinary classroom looks like. In Grade 9-10, staff are aiming to bridge the discipline gap among teachers, goals for the students, and other avenues where interdisciplinary goals can be met.

The initial discussion focused around what all the teachers believe an SHSID 9-10 interdisciplinary class would look like and initial ways various teachers are already integrating their lessons already. The general consensus was to have a curriculum that is more closely aligned along with lessons and projects that allow students the opportunity to make the cross curricular connections. It was mentioned that teachers should work toward being more a guide on the side rather than a sage on the stage.

This was an excellent professional development session that resulted in moving the staff closer to putting into practice a larger array of student based opportunities to utilize their wide skill set and better prepare the 9-10 students not just for later school years but for a life as a global citizen.
