Grade 8: Shanghai Healing Home

On October 21st , SHSID students from Grade 7 and 8 had their first visit to the Shanghai Healing Home, a non-profit private institution founded in 2009 which provides surgeries and healthcare for children with physical or mental deformities. Kids there are young, with ages ranging from a few months to 6 years old. They are brought from different orphanages around China as the public orphanages do not always have good facilities and healthcare for those “special babies”. They need extra love and care. Our volunteers are willing to spend their time to play with them.

When we arrived at SHH, we first had an orientation from Jessica, a nurse and a volunteer in the SHH. She told us that their goal is to help all the children to recover and find a loving home, and that she felt happy that people came here to play with the children to make this place more like a home. She told us to wash our hands before making contact with the children as they can easily get sick, and it also helps to protect ourselves. We were not allowed to feed the children with our own snacks because it would make them to full to eat their proper meals.

After the orientation, we started our activities and went into individual rooms to play with the children. The children were all very cute and they smiled when they saw us. We hugged the children and played with them. Some of us also read books to them. They loved to listen to the stories! While playing with the children, we all felt relaxed and happy. They were just like other kids who laugh when they are happy, cry when they are sad. After all, they are just children who need love and care from people. Their parents abandoned them because of their deformities, but they are innocent, and they need love!

After playing with them about an hour, the children were going to have their afternoon snacks. We helped the caregivers to bring them downstairs to the dining room. We also helped to feed the children. When we had to leave, both the children and us were sad. We said goodbye to those cute children and finished our first visit. We are looking forward to our next visit on November 18th. If you are interested and would like to meet those lovely children, come and join us!
